   Volunteers sought for 2010 CWPT Park Day  
 



This high school ROTC group took on the task of clearing pines and planting hardwood seedlings at the Park during a past CWPT Park Day. Volunteering at this once-a-year event makes a great group activitiy!



On Saturday, April 10, 2010, Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park will be one of hundreds of Civil War sites across the country to host a volunteer workday as part of the Civil War Preservation Trust’s (CWPT) Annual Park Day. The CWPT teams up with sites like ChickChatt in this nationwide effort with the goal of helping to clean and restore America’s irreplaceable Civil War battlefields.   read more (278 words)

   The Chase celebrates its 42nd running

The forty-second running of The Chickamauga Chase will be held on April 17th, 2010 at Chickamauga Battlefield in north Georgia. The race, presented by IcyHot with support from UBS Financial Services and Hutcheson Medical Center, benefits the operations of Friends of the Park.

   New Civil War signs mark driving trail

A new Tennessee Civil War Trails program got a jump-start in Chattanooga with the recent installation of a dozen interpretive signs for tourism driving tours. Park historian Jim Ogden worked with Dr. Daryl Black, executive director of the Chattanooga History Center, to draft text for the twelve new Civil War Trail markers.

Chickamauga and Chattanooga chief historian Jim Ogden led a hiking tour of Moccasin Bend on a recent Saturday morning, guiding prospective trail volunteers from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga and the community at large to sites of Civil War significance. More than a hundred turned out to view well-preserved traces of 1863 Union gun emplacements, bivouac shelter foundations and a log-and-earth redoubt.  read more (405 words)

In honor of Black History Month, Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park invites the public to a free program at its Chickamauga Battlefield Visitor Center on Saturday, February 20, 2010 at 1:30 P.M. A Park Ranger will talk about the 44th United States Colored Troops (USCT), a regiment of freed slaves from North Georgia and Southeast Tennessee who enlisted in Chattanooga during the spring of 1864 to fight for the freedom of their fellow African-Americans. This 30 minute program will address the risk and sacrifice these soldiers faced in their own story of “Glory.”

   USCT living historians sought for PA commemoration

The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania is asking Civil War living historians in other states to identify and designate local African-American re-enactors as official delegates to a coming commemoration of African-American patriots and their significant role in the American Civil War. The commemoration of black Civil War troops, one way that PA is marking the 150th anniversary of the American Civil War from 2011 through 2015, takes place November 4-7, 2010 in Harrisburg.

Black in Blue and Gray, a pictorial exhibit recognizing the contributions of former slaves and free Blacks toward slave freedom in the Civil War, will be on display February 3 through February 28 at the Chickamauga Battleifeld Visitors Center at Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park. The exhibit was developed by the Mary Walker Historical and Education Foundation, based in Chattanooga.  read more (425 words)

   Beginning Hikers invited to Chickamauga hike

The Chattanooga Hiking Club and Outdoor Chattanooga are hosting a beginners' hike at the Park's Chickamauga Battlefield unit on Sunday, January 31 at 9 AM. The public is invited. The 3.5-mile jaunt will meander through the easy, wooded trails that crisscross the historic Battlefield. Participants should meet at the Chickamauga Battlefield Visitors Center lower parking lot by 9 a.m. The hike is appropriate for adults and kids ages 8 and older, and will take place even in light snow or cold weather.    Events mark 146th Battles for Chattanooga anniversary

Join NPS Park rangers and volunteers to explore the events of November 1863 when the Union and Confederates armies struggled for control of Chattanooga as the gateway to the lower South.

Most events take place at the Chattanooga units of the Park: Lookout Mountain, Missionary Ridge, Orchard Knob and Moccasin Bend. Additional events explore downtown Chattanooga and Ringgold, GA. All are open to the public free of charge. Please note that, in case of inclement weather, alternative programming will be offered at the Park Visitor Center.    Kim Coons named supervisor of education, interpretation

Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park has hired Kim Coons as Supervisor for Interpretation and Education. Kim came to the Park from Fort Frederica National Monument at St. Simons Island, GA, where she had served as Chief Ranger for Interpretation since late 2002.
