     Joining & Giving

All donations to our 501(c)(3) work help us enhance Chickamauga & Chattanooga National Military Park and promote public appreciation for the history it symbolizes. While the Park's basic operations are funded by the National Park Service, many features and programs that visitors enjoy most are either unfunded or underfunded in its annual budget allocation. The nonprofit Friends of the Park work to make up the difference, committed to creating a bright margin of excellence for the Park and the public it is designed to serve.

There are four ways you can make a difference:

  1. Become a member or renew a membership.
  2. Make a memorial or honorary gift.
  3. Support our Park Restoration Fund or a specific restoration project.
  4. Make a gift or bequest by will.

1. Become a member or renew your membership
Membership giving supports our annual operations on behalf of the Park, is wholly tax deductible, and is renewable each January. All members receive our ChickChatt newsletter, periodic email updates (if we receive an address), and advance notice or discounts on our programs. Membership giving levels include:

  • Private ($30-49)
  • Lieutenant ($50-99)
  • Captain ($100-249)
  • Major ($250-499)
  • Colonel ($500-999)
  • General ($1000+)

3. Make a memorial or honorary gift
We welcome memorial contributions and gifts in honor or friends, associates and loved ones. The donor receives our grateful thanks for a wholly tax deductible donation, and we send appropriate acknowledgment to the honoree or family of the deceased. All gifts are put to good use toward our mission. Many people make contributions in memory of an ancestor who took part in the Civil War action that, in 1863, hallowed the ground the Park now preserves. We welcome your gifts and family stories! Visit our online PARK STORY BOOK, which is set aside to preserve Park lovers' personal stories and make them accessible to others.

4. Support Park Restoration
Visitors can best understand the stories commemorated at Chickamauga and Chattanooga when its landscapes, monuments and historic structures reflect their condition during the Civil War or the late 19th century when the Park was established. Our Park Restoration Fund helps care for commemorative features and natural landscapes that have been altered or degraded by weather or, sadly, human vandalism. The financial need is great. Like all National Parks, ours has operated under two decades of insufficient funding. Preserving the treasures on its 9,100 acres is a task that demands $1.5 million a year, but the Park gets only about a third that much each year to do the job. Its backlog of restoration projects is estimated at $10-20 million. But every major task must start somewhere. In 2009, the Friends received a five-year, $50,000 Thomas W. Jewell Memorial Fund grant that is helping us accomplish specific projects as well as establish and publicize the need for a permanent fund that will benefit Park restoration.

To make such a gift by mail, click HERE to download and print a form you can fill out and mail with your contribution, made payable to Friends of the Park, at P.O. Box 748, Chattanooga, TN 37401.

Note: If you wish to direct your gift to a specific restoration project, kindly indicate your instructions during the transaction when you see the "Instructions to Seller" field.

5. Make a gift or bequest by will
Remembering the Friends of the Park in your will is a far-sighted act of generosity toward an important mission: building new generations of Park lovers who will care for it tomorrow as we do today.

You can use your will or trust to direct a sum of money, percentage of estate, or specific item to Friends of the Park. Whichever you choose, it will not be subject to estate or inheritance tax and will reduce the tax burden or your estate. The value of the bequest you make is deducted when the taxable estate is determined, with no limit on the deduction available. Gifts are to be made to the Friends of Chickamauga & Chattanooga National Military Park, a 501(c) (3) nonprofit corporation organized and existing under the laws of the State of Tennessee with a business address at Miller & Martin, PLLC, 1000 Volunteer Building, Chattanooga, TN 37402, Attn: Ansley Moses.

Types of bequests include:

  • A GENERAL BEQUEST, one of the most popular ways to make a charitable gift by will, allows you to leave a specified dollar amount in your will to the Friends of the Park.
  • A SPECIFIC BEQUEST allows you to leave us a specified piece of property or fixed percentage of your estate.
  • A RESIDUARY BEQUEST allows you to leave us the balance or a portion (specified as a percent or dollar amount) of your estate after specific bequests, debts, taxes and expenses are paid.
  • A CONTINGENT BEQUEST provides the Friends the portion of your estate designated for another if that person dies before you. This can ensure that your property will go to the charitable purpose of the Friends of the Park rather than to an unintended beneficiary such as the government.

For your reference, the Friends' tax identification number is 58-1708782. You should work with your attorney to make your bequest but, if you need us to help, we can provide and discuss bequest language with you. For engage us, please contact our Executive Director by calling our Message Line at (423) 624-6914. We will respond quickly and make sure that we provide an appropriate contact to help you.
